What are WoodShield Posts?

WoodShield posts are a pine farming or vineyard post which offers greater strength and rigidity than standard chemically treated posts yet they have the protective properties, toughness and lifespan of polyethylene, plastic.

Our timber posts feature a completely chemical free protection system.

How does the plastic/protection work without chemicals?

The WoodShield production process coats a machined pine timber pole in a protective layer of plastic up to 6mm thick, this encases the post to a finished size of 83mm for a standard post and 124mm for row-end posts.

The process creates a strong adhesive bond between the timber and the plastic sheath which actually increases its overall strength.

The process completely seals the post in plastic which is a pipe grade resin, equivalent to rural polypipe, leaving no timber exposed.

The post ends are sealed with very thick end caps which allow the posts to be hydraulically “whacked” into the ground just as a standard timber post would be.

I’ve tried/heard alternative posts are not as strong as CCA posts

WoodShield are pine timber post, not plastic or steel. Recently, Melbourne Testing Services’ completed their ‘3 Point Bending Tests’ on the WoodSield posts and the results showed they have a 40 to 50% higher breaking force than treated pine posts.

Also, the breakage deflection angle is twice that of normal posts as well.

So these have superior strength to normal posts.

How are they better than current CCA posts?

We have addressed most of the issues around chemically treated posts; warping, splitting, chemical leaching, rotting, to name a few.

Due to their increased strength, even breakages at ground level and from mechanical harvesting has been significantly reduced.

Being coated in plastic ensures the posts are resilient to the vermin, the harsh Australian climate and offer a long life timber posts with little to no degradation over time.

While being stronger, they are actually lighter to handle and as the plastic is smooth making them very easy to handle.

WoodShield posts are chemical free and certified organic so they are also ideal for organic growers.

The disposal of broken CCA posts has become a major issue for the industry and now adds to the unit cost of a post. Not to mention the CCA posts do gradually deteriorate, can be hazardous to personnel handling them and can leach chemicals into your soil.

Do you have to have special fasteners like the other plastic or steel posts

No,

As the WoodShield posts are timber they cater to all standard fence fastening systems, the plastic coating actually shrinks around nails, staples and screws which seals them.

Even electrification of WoodShield fences is easier as they require fewer insulators which lessens the overall cost of installation and maintenance.

No doubt the price is higher than CCA posts

While having a slightly higher purchase price the advantages in, ease of handling, superior strength, lower breakage rates, longer life, no chemical issues, no disposal costs and being organic certified provide for a lower product-life cost than chemically treated posts.

I haven’t heard of anyone else using them?

We have many other vineyards that have now had WoodShield posts in the ground for up to five years and we receive excellent feedback from both growers and contractors alike.
